[That answer certainly lays any doubt to rest. And as requested, after another somewhat lengthier pause, a list of pigments and other components follows.]
A sensible suggestion.
[So sensible that he will absolutely come home with two whole sets of plates.]
[Sometimes it is easy to forget that Wei Ying isn't the only gift fate has granted him in this world. Well, not anymore. He will never again forget how fortunate he is.]
He could not know how right Wei Ying had been at the time to say so, but Klaudia had proven herself soon enough and continues to do so even now. Even if he suspects the suspense isn't wholly for the sake of his health, but a little for her own amusement, too. More so than ever, he is glad to see her in good and mischievous spirits again, whatever argument she apparently needs settled.
And so he could not bear to keep his thoughtful disciple waiting for long, soon approaching the house with two unassuming but fairly large boxes in his hands.
A very silly response to his comment, but how else is she supposed to express her delight at seeing my disciple at the forefront of that compliment. The joy and pride all but glows from inside her chest, bubbling up as she grins at the response. That's her. His disciple. Despite all of the worry and grief from the previous week, there's still a place for her here and a relationship for her to cherish, and that means the world to her.
The waiting isn't terrible on her end, not when she's waited far longer for less worthwhile things in her life. The stairs leading up to the front door of their property make as good a seat as any, and she whittles the time away by using light magic to push around a few errant stones in the street. She's getting better, she thinks, at making solid projections instead of insubstantial ones--though her attempts to combine them with her illusions have proven to be a complicated technique. Absorbed as she is in her practice, Klaudia doesn't look up until she hears footsteps approaching; but upon seeing Lan Wangji she springs to her feet, pebbles and practice forgotten.
"Welcome back!" she chimes as she hurries down the long walkway steps to meet him at the road, very glad to see him again despite how brief the absence was. "Are those the plates you mentioned? I can help you carry them!" She holds her hands out expectantly, hoping to be allowed to take one of the boxes and lighten his load.
The way home is shorter for knowing someone is waiting for him. But even so, he would not have expected her to be waiting in front of the doors, fully absorbed in practicing her light technique. He can't help but pause at the gate to avoid disturbing her, to watch for a moment. A sight he could not have understood only days ago; how good it is to have a disciple so devoted, so unrestrained, in her thirst for knowledge as much as in her affections.
But he will not keep her waiting for long and soon continues up the walkway. At her greeting, he offers a soft smile and nod in return. "Heavy," he cautions, but does lower his arms a little so she may better take one of the boxes. It is her gift, after all, though it's a gift of its own to see her so delighted.
His warning is certainly heeded with care as Klaudia reaches for the box, her full concentration absorbed in making sure that she doesn't drop it. It's heavy--like he said, but not too much for the short trip inside the house. She's determined to manage it, if only to be helpful to her shifu.
Once she's got the box secured in her arms, she focuses her beaming smile on Lan Wangji once more. "I hope you had a good walk! I didn't think you were going to buy anything when you left earlier; I can't wait to see them! ...In our kitchen, I mean. I saw the pictures, but pictures aren't the same as holding them. We'll have to find a spot for them, too." Probably not too difficult. The kitchen is large, and they haven't been living here nearly long enough to fill it up with things.
She starts up the walk, carefully minding each step so that she doesn't trip--but still inevitably preoccupied with chattering at him as well. "Should I tell you what a ghost said now? Or wait until we're inside?" She is brimming with the energy to tattle, but maybe he'd like to get a few steps past the door before she launches into whatever outrageous thing she's been holding in.
Her energy for being joyful and chatty certainly seems inexhaustible today. Perhaps it's not a little relief still, which has been buoying him as well. Relief and determination to return the kindness and care of his loved ones in his time of need. Though he had not set out to buy anything and only chanced upon this gift. He might even say so, if Klaudia were forced to pause for breath during any of this. But one Klaudia may rival five Lan disciples in their eagerness to talk and share with him. His heart swells with fondness as he listens, walking slightly ahead so that he can shift the box to one arm and open the door for both of them when they get there.
But even before, Klaudia reveals what she really desires to talk about. Another argument between the two most passionate people he knows, somehow in need of his arbitrating. Though her restraint is commendable and deserves to be rewarded. "Go ahead," he allows, amusement already tugging at his lips.
The permission to continue lights up Klaudia's expression with an excited grin--and almost has her missing the step over the manor's threshold. She catches herself quickly and takes her next few steps more carefully before looking up to Lan Wangji again. A little less exuberance, a little more sheepishness, but no less willing to tattle.
"I told a ghost shifu about the plates you were getting. I was so excited, and I wanted him to see--and I told him that he could have the red one, since I know he likes that color a lot. But then he told me that he wants a black plate because that's also his favorite color!" The indignation! How could a ghost be so demanding? "So I told him that he can't have a black one because there isn't one and that would be boring anyway. And then I told him that black wasn't a color--it's just what happens when there's no color at all! And he wouldn't agree with me! He says that ink is black and you can't have ink that isn't a color, so black has to be a color. But he's very wrong, and you should tell him so."
